MIAWODO : Support to very small businesses in Togo
The Togolese population suffers from underemployment due to the lack of appropriate training and the poor structuring of businesses (very informal economy). In addition, the growing production of waste generates pollution and major health risks: waste is most often burnt or dumped in informal dumps. Strengthening the waste management sector can both create green, sustainable and decent jobs and improve the health conditions of the Togolese people.
Employability and waste management
MIAWODO, created by Entrepreneurs du Monde in 2018, contributes to making the Waste sector in Togo more efficient and inclusive. Indeed, it aims to give the opportunity:
– young people to become trained and recognized players in the waste sector, either as employees or entrepreneurs ;
– vulnerable populations to recycle their waste instead of burning it, by facilitating collection in return for a small additional income;
– everyone to contribute to the re-use of waste.

It works !
I give a second life to waste!
I’m a waste management entrepreneur: I recover and resell certain recyclable materials such as metal, plastic and paper.
Before becoming an entrepreneur, I used to work in a waste collection center, but it closed down. I found myself without a job, but thanks to MIAWODO, I was able to launch my business. I took the Green Entrepreneurship and Recycling course to set up my business. Now I have a basic knowledge of accounting and can manage a business.
Thanks to MIAWODO’s help, my business is doing well. They gave me a loan to develop my business. I’m earning a living and I’ve hired other young people! In fact, I’m close to repaying the loan, so I can continue to run my business with peace of mind.

Acting across the entire value chain
The team raises awareness among secondary school pupils, students and residents of poor neighborhoods of the need to reduce and manage waste, and of the opportunities in the sector. It trains young people as collectors and processors, and enhances their employability and entrepreneurial skills in this sector. It organizes collection and sales to processors:
– training women entrepreneurs supported by Assilassimé in sorting techniques
– training collectors in weighing, compensation, management and relations with processors
